In North Korea all the properties belong to North Korean regime and North Korean people are allowed to live in those apartment with a few amount of housing permission fee.

However, most North Korean people think their housing as a personal property and sell their entry permit to others.  The price of some apartments in Pyongyang reaches up to hundreds of thousands dollars.  Some rich North Korean people own more than one apartment.   

North Korean regime provides apartments to important scients and some people who lost their homes because of the flood.  North Korea seems to allow western market economy as well as communist economy.

Most North Korean apartments were built more than 30 years ago so that the facilities inside the apartment are too old and need repair.  There is a big problem with the inequality of housing in North Korea because the price of housing in Pyongyang is much higher than that of some suburban cities in North Korea, even though they own one apartment per family. 

I think the price of housing will be increased much more rapidly when the new and up-to-date wide roads are constructed in the suburban cities after the unification of Korea.

Even though all the houses legally belong to North Korean regime and people in North Korea are only allowed to live temporarily as long as North Korean regime permits, in reality, many North Korean people sell and buy houses.

The real estate market is so active that many people sell or purchase houses. Especially houses in Pyongyang are in very high demand and their price is also very high.

I do not think houses built in North Korea are not safe to live in very long because they are lack in sufficient concrete and reinforcing steel bars. I think they should be rebuilt after the unification of Korea.

Some rich North Korean people buy and build many houses as an investment. North Korean regime allows such investment to collect tax from them.

My grandmother, Bong Ja Han, passed away a few days ago.

She was in the middle of Korean War in 1950. At that time she was attending Daejon teacher's school to become an elementary school teacher.

She had to quit her studying and escaped on foot from her home to her grandfather's house located in Goheung. I understand it took many days and nights because she had to walk toward Geheung from Daejeon on foot.

I hope there will be no war again in Korean Peninsula.

  Mt. KumGang 금강산 金剛山, literally "Diamond Mountain", is a range of mountains in DPRK. It is also the most famous mountain and a symbol of the country. It often appears in paintings, patriotic songs and poetries.

  Recently, Mt. KumGang has also become a famous tourist destination, due to its magnificent view and picturesque landscape throughout the seasons. The government seems to be seeking investment for local hotel projects. Facing heavy sanctions, tourism might be a rather stable source of income.

  The mountains are usually divided in 3 areas: Inner KumGang, Outer KumGang and Sea KumGang, each with unique visual features. The formation of its unique shape is due to the climate and geological activity.

- Inner KumGang: Nice views, visitors enjoy walking in Manpok ravine.

- Outer KumGang: Many rocky peaks. Chipson peak has many waterfalls.

- Sea KumGang: Famous for lagoons and stone pillars.

  It is interesting to find that Mt. KumGang is actually very close to the border of South Korea, and on a spot South Korea's land can be seen clearly afar. It makes us wonder if some defectors ever managed to swim across the sea. It is so near yet so far.

북한 사람들의 춤, 노래, 음식은 조금 독특하다.

한반도 통일 이후에도 북한식 식당, 음식, 서커스, 문화는 보전을 하면 관광객 유치에도 크게 도움이 될 것 같다. "북한 역사 박물관"을 만들어 잘 보전했으면 좋겠다. 북한의 독특한 문화와 역사를 보기 위해서 많은 해외 관광객들이 방문하지 않을까? 북한의 역사와 문화도 하나의 Business로서 자리 잡지 않을까?

미국 Georgetown Univeristy의 William Brown 교수는 북한이 자립적인 국가인 것 처럼 보이려고 하지만, 1948 이후 무역 흑자를 기록한 적이 없다고 주장하셨다.


“북한은 ‘주체’를 내세우며 자립적인 것처럼 보이려 한다. 그들은 항상 이야기한다. 자립(self-reliance), 자립, 자립(웃음). 하지만 너무 많이 말하는 것은 사실이 아니라는 뜻이기도 하다. 사회주의 시절 소련과 동유럽이 북한에 많은 투자를 해서 많은 공장과 기계, 숙련된 노동자들이 있었다. 인적 자원도 강하다. 모두가 잘 교육받고 노동하는 법을 알고 있다. 광물과 금속, 수력 자원도 풍부하다. 긍정적인 측면이 많다. 이런 것들로 자신들이 자립적이라고 생각한다. 그러나 북한의 국제 무역을 실제 들여다보면 다른 것이 보인다. 1948년 이후 북한은 한 번도 무역 흑자를 기록한 적이 없다. 항상 적자였다.”
